Dance Classes

We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with your child and we appreciate your interest in our dance, music and fitness programs. We take great pride in our organization, and we welcome you to become a part of it.

Academy of the Performing Arts - Dance School in The Woodlands TXOur season begins in September with the start of the school year. Upon registering with us for classes in September you will receive our information packet which is full of information that will inform you of our yearly activities, our teaching methods, and our team goals and rules. Also included in this packet is information regarding our expenses. Being a part of our team requires extreme dedication and commitment from both the parents and the members. We encourage you and your dancer to read the material carefully, as many of your questions should be answered from within the packet.

Our program consists of four teams that are divided by grade in order to comply with competitive requirements. Our teams include pre-school ages 3 to 5, 1st-3rd, 4th-6th, 7th-9th, and 10th-12th. Each team will learn choreography in class for competition and will continue to polish and perfect their routines until competition season. The competitive season usually begins in late January and ends in April. We generally attend four to five local competitions a year, competing against other junior competitive teams from across Texas and surrounding states. Unlike many teams, everyone dances--we just have to find the correct team for you. We will occasionally require mandatory extra practices during heavy competition season. Each team will also have an officer group that will learn one extra officer ensemble dance to compete with. Your child will also have the option of performing a solo, duet, trio, or an ensemble at competition, if they meet studio requirements.

In addition to our team and officer classes, we recommend attending a minimum of one technique and/or lyrical classes in order to enhance your child's dance skills (officers will be expected to attend). Technique is offered for four different levels of ability. Technique I is designed for beginner dancers, while Technique II is directed towards intermediate. Intermediate Leaps and Turns is recommended for our students looking to explore a more mature approach of Intermediate to Advanced leaps and turns classes. Your child's teacher will be able to offer assistance for placement. Our teachers will also offer private lessons for those students who need or wish to receive more individual instruction.

Outside of preparing for competition, we make appearances in local parades and other local performing opportunities that arise. Holidays are always celebrated with in-class parties and we love to celebrate Christmas in a more elegant way with a high tea. After competition season we will start spring semester and fall registration begins. We will follow the Conroe I.S.D. schedule for holidays and vacations.

As dance educators, our ultimate goal is to teach your child strong dance technique while instilling discipline, good sportsmanship, and high moral character. We will provide encouragement for your child as we strive to build the self-esteem and confidence that is so crucial during the developing years. Constructive criticism will frequently be used while polishing technique and routines, ultimately helping your child to accept criticism graciously and gracefully. Peer critiques will also be utilized, allowing your child to develop a sense of responsibility for the success of their own team, and allowing the development of leadership skills. Outside of all of these "grown-up" concerns, your child will develop friendships and memories that can last a lifetime. We feel our program has a lot to offer, and we would love to be a part of your child's development. We look forward to working with you and your child!

Dreams of High Kicks,

Jo Anna Clark
